Ordering Gas Stuff

In order to do classroom demonstrations, you will need 3 - 5 60-mL syringes, a similar number of syringe caps and vial caps and 20 cm Latex tubing. You'll also need silicone oil. Several excellent companies sell these things. Specific details are given below.

If you are outfitting a class in order to do labs, you'll need more stuff! For a class of 24 students working in pairs, you should purchase 30 syringes, syringe caps and vial caps, as well as 2 m Latex tubing and silicone oil. Both Flinn and Educational Innovations sells classroom kits (Flinn: AP5951 and Educational Innovations: GAS #321)! Check them out!
Note:
Prices listed are from 2006 catalogs.

Syringes. 60-mL plastic syringes with a LuerLOK fitting (For demonstrating gas chemistry, the teacher should have about 5 syringes; for a laboratory setting, estimate 3 syringes per pair.) If you are buying just a few for demonstrating gas chemistry, try Flinn or Educational Innovations:

Flinn sells individual syringes: Order #AP8754; $3.35 each (multi-packs are not listed)

Educational Innovations: Order #GAS-140 $2.25 for 1 - 5; $1.95 for 6+

Buying a box of 30 saves money — cost drops to less than $1 each!
Fisher only sells in bulk: Order #14-823-2D; $24.61 for 30; $89.49 for 4 pks x 30

S17 Science Supplies EQ 109 (30 syringes $67)

Syringe Caps. You will need one for each syringe — but they are cheap!)

Flinn sells Flinn AP8958; ten-pack, $2.25

Educational Innovations GAS-160, ten-pack, $1.95

S17 Science Supplies EQ 081 (10 syringe caps $ 4.50)

Plastic vial caps that fit within the barrel of the syringe (one per syringe)

Educational Innovations GAS-180, ten-pack, $2.50 (25 cents each)

Fisher Scientific, Part Number 03-340-18E (caps only; $40.13 for 500: 8 cents each) OR Part Number 03-339-26B (These come with the vials — they cost $36.81 for 144 (25.6 cents each)

Latex tubing. 1/8-inch (3.175 mm) ID, (Each pair of students should have one 15 cm length and two 4 cm lengths; a ten foot roll would be enough for 13 pairs of students)

Flinn #AP2076; 10-ft, $5.75

Educational Innovations #GAS-220, 5-ft, $5.95

Silicone oil. (Each pair of students (or every other pair) should have a one-ounce dropper bottle of silicone oil — they will use a few drops at a time so the oil will last for years. Also, no other oil works —motor oil, vegetable oil, and mineral oil are readily absorbed into the rubber, thus destroying the plunger’s rubber diaphragm.

Educational Innovations sells bottles of silicone oil for $5.95. Part #GAS-150.

Fisher sells dropper bottles and silicone oil separately.
Silicone oil, Fisher #S159-500, $50.54 for 500 mL (will last you years!)
Poly dropper bottles, Fisher #02-911-870, $174.74 for a case of 48 — or any dropper bottle will work. (We buy 10 dropper bottles for $2.50 (25 cents each) from American Science Surplus (Cat #33983)

Microscale Gas Chemistry Book.

Microscale Gas Chemistry, 4th Edition (early 2006 release), Bruce Mattson, Michael Anderson, Susan Mattson
This updated collection of articles that appeared as a series in Chem13 News from October 1996 - present. Instructions are given for the generation of 17 different gases on a microscale level. This book is designed for direct use by teachers. Included are over 140 experiments and student laboratory activities. This book is a printed version of the Microscale Gas Chemistry website. Spiral bound, 485 pages. Educational Innovations BK-595; $39.95

Flinn Scientific provides most of the equipment called for in our microscale gas techniques (syringe kits, etc.) Flinn has also published our 350-page book designed for use by high school students and their teachers. Each experiment contains a significant pedagogical component. The book covers the gases described in Chapters 1 - 10 below. Go to their website. Flinn sells in the USA only.
Educational Innovations sells the catalyst tubes used in many experiments as well as general equipment for gas chemistry. They sell a 250-page book containing updated versions to all of the articles that have appeared in Chem13 News. This book will be updated about once per year as new articles appear in Chem13 New. Go to their webpage. Educational Innovations sells worldwide.
Fisher Scientific generally sells in larger quantities than the other companies. Their prices are generally very good. Go to their website.
Micro Mole Scientific sells our book "Chemistry of Gases. A Microscale Approach." Their price is similar to Flinn's but they sell outside the USA as well as in the USA. Micro Mole also sells a variety of syringes, pipets, and many, many other things for teaching science. Go to the website.

S17 Science Supplies & Services sells our book "Chemistry of Gases. A Microscale Approach." Their price is similar to Flinn's and they sell worldewide. S17 also sells a variety of syringes, syringe caps and related parts and many, many other things for teaching science. Go to the website.

Chem 13 News is an informal magazine published for teachers of introductory chemistry courses, particularly high school teachers. All of our gas articles have appeared in this journal starting in 1996. More information or Visit their website.

Microscale Gas Video - In this video, Dr. Mattson demonstrates the unique techniques that are described in our Microscale Gas Chemistry book. Watch Doc M as he prepares and reacts different gases. The video is designed to help the instructor learn various gas techniques with syringes. Available from Educational Innovations. GAS-250 Microscale Gas Video - $14.95.
